In 2001, FEdS was asked by Microsoft, one of its member companies, to negotiate with the DfEE, as it was then, to establish the e-Learning Foundation. Both parties agreed to provide £1m each to establish the Foundation. FEdS set up the charity, appointed the Trustees and their Chairman and also the first and only Chief Executive, Valerie Thompson.
