A seminar followed by a Christmas drinks reception.
If you attended WorldSkills London 2011or watched the videos on www.worldskillslondon2011.com you’ll have seen and felt the buzz it created around vocational skills. The most memorable image of all was the sea of young faces lit up by the enthusiasm and delight of shared endeavour and success.
The four-day event, held in London’s ExCel centre in October, attracted more than 200,000 visitors. The UK finished fifth in the medals table (up from seventh in 2009) but with still some way to go to match the performance of countries such as Korea, Japan and Switzerland. However, we will not have to wait until the next WorldSkills competition, due to be held in Leipzig in 2013, to showcase young people’s talent and potential.
London 2011 organisers want to build on the momentum of this year’s event by holding an annual cycle of skills competitions which will culminate every year in a major event over one week in October.
The aim is to get across the message to young people, employers, learning providers and parents that apprenticeships and vocational learning have value and are gateways to a fulfilling life and career.
David Cragg has had a distinguished and varied career dedicated to learning and skills development in teaching, industrial liaison and economic development. He will give delegates an insight into the legacy plans and there will be time for discussion.
This has been a difficult and challenging year. We hope this event will raise the spirits a little – and a glass of wine after the seminar should help!
We are grateful to FEdS’ member ifs for their generous support in providing the venue for the evening.
