Joe’s early career was in management education and training and he was Principal of Ashorne Hill Management College. He was also the corporate Education and Training Manager for Corus and from this policymaking role became a specialist on how business and schools should work together on 14-19 education and on education business links more generally, including how to forge partnerships.   He is currently a school governor and a member of the Council of a LLSC.  Another area of interest is vocational education and training from Key Stage 4 to HE, particularly the necessary linkages between, and mutual benefits for, business and HE. Joe was appointed to the DfES Foundation Degree Design Group chaired by Ivor Crewe in 2001-2, to the Foundation Degree Task Force chaired by Leslie Wagner in 2002-3 and became a member of the Board of Foundation Degree Forward (fdf), chaired by Dick Coldwell between 2003 and 2009. This long exposure to the development and growth of Foundation Degrees involved a working knowledge of how HE can work closely with businesses in mutually supportive ways and at the same time he was a member of the Policy Forum of the Council for Industry and Higher education.  In 2006, he was appointed as a Member for the Council for Administration. He also helps businesses secure mutually worthwhile partnerships with local schools and provides committee membership and chairmanship, selection skills and independent management advice for appropriate educational institutions
